Een wagen die richting Gent reed week van de rijbaan af en botste op een geparkeerde oplegger die op de pechstrook geparkeerd stond. De Zelzaatse brandweer kwam ter plaatse, evenals een ambulance, een MUG-team en de lokale politie. De brandweer bevrijdde de bestuurder, en probeerde deze nog te reanimeren, samen met het MUG-team, maar toch overleed de man uit Assenede ter plaatse. De rijbaan was geruime tijd volledig afgesloten. Er was geen andere voertuig betrokken bij het ongeval.
